(Fun Ass Questions)
So, you're planning your wedding. It's overwhelming. There's the venue, the food, decorations, the DJ, and of course, your photographer. It's anxiety inducing, I know!
"What questions do I ask?", "How do I know this one is the right one?"
Well, hopefully I can make this process a little easier for you. Here's a list of frequently asked questions that I get in addition to what you may or may not have been thinking to ask for photorgaphers in general.
1. Do you have my date available?
I highly suggest reaching out to me HERE with your wedding details to see if I will be available for your wedding.
2. What's your photography style?
My photography partner once told me my style is, "crispy, vibrant and modern. If you haven't poked around my site I suggest you do and let me know if her description is correct lol.
3. What's your working style?
I try to be as hands off as possible. I'm there to capture the day as it happens. unless someone is asking for group photos or it is necessary (like family photos and portraits) I'm there to document your day as journalisticly yet editorially as I can (aka candid and beautifully).
4. What do you think distinguishes your work from that of other photographers?
I'm going to be honest. There's a lot of really great photographers out there. So your job to decide which one is the best is a really hard choice. With that, my focus is you, the couple. I make it my goal to build a relationship with you. You feeling at ease in front of my camera is what allows me to capture such beautiful and candid moments that my clients love and that potential clients reach out to me for.
If you value a great relationship with your photographer and great photography at a great price then you may want to go with me. Just saying😉
5. What type of equipment do you use?
I get this a lot. And not by other photographers (though they do ask it as well and I would expect it). I'm going to be frank. This really doesn't matter at all (I mean it does for me, it shouldn't matter to you). Look at any great photo you come across. It's assumed that the person who took it has the necessary gear to capture that image in addition has the skills to capture it.
I like to tell folks, cameras don't know emotion, they don't know composition, they don't know light. It's the dummy (me) behind the camera that creates the photos that you see here and would love me to create for you. With that said, I own some pretty damn good gear lol
6. Do you shoot film or digital or both? and do you provide black and white versions?
I love film. It's beautiful. It's tactile. but it's expensive and it takes a while to develop, scan, process. That would mean more money you'd have to pay. So I shoot all on digital. As for black and white, as Michael Jackson once put it...I do provide black and white versions of images though they're primarily portraits😜
7. Can I give you a list of specific shots we would like?
Absolutely. I would love that :)
8. What information do you need from me before the wedding day?
Your wedding itinerary is the most important thing. Knowing where to be and when to be there will be pretty important. Though I've had to wing it from time to time. But let's not do that. Additionally, if you're hiring a videographer it would be lovely to get their information, only so I can stalk their Instagram and critique their work (I'm kidding...halfway). No but really, it's great to coordinate with them so we're not stepping on each others fresh sneakers and you get the best shots from us both.
10. May I have a list of references?
Absolutely...not. never ever ever...Ok I'm lying. Of course you can have references.
The Special day
11. Will you be the one photographing our wedding? will you have any assistants?
Great question. Typically it will be wedding "studios" that has a handful of photographers that shoot any given wedding for any given weekend. That's not me. Remember when I mentioned I love to build relationships with my couples? (not the weird kind of relationship where we will soon have our own show on TLC, unless you want to🤷). With that, it just wouldn't be cool if some rando just shows up to your wedding. That 1. makes things awkward and 2. doesn't allow you to fully relax in front of the camera. You get me. all of me. photographically speaking of course.
As for an "assistant". That would be my second photographer. If you didn't get a collection that has one, then they wont show up unannounced. I hope.
12. Do you have backup equipment? What about a backup plan if you are unable to shoot my wedding for some reason?
*Knock on virtual wood* I've never had to miss a wedding for any reason whatsoever...well there was that one time when a very famous person...never mind, that's a different story, email me, I'll tell you all about it... JK. Equipment, I've got it covered. I always roll with backup.
13. If my wedding site is out of your area, do you charge a travel fee and what does that cover?
Another fantastic question. Man you guys come up with some great stuff! anything outside a 50 mile round trip radius I charge a travel fee (email me to get rates and all that). If it is a destination wedding, I definitely travel for those, so please bring me along. pretty please! that typically involves the cost of travel. We can go over details over email or in person.
14. How will you (and your assistants) be dressed?
I try to keep my dresses tasteful. Not too long. Not too short. Just enough length to be able to maneuver...confused? sorry about that. In seriousness, I wear bow ties, no questions asked, a lovely button up, some great looking chinos or slacks and very comfy shoes that will allow me to run around all day. You have restrictions on attire, let's discuss.
15. Is it okay if other people take photos while you're taking photos?
Absolutely not. I will confiscate their device if they do. I am the only photographer. I should be THE only photographer. ever. on the planet....you guessed it, I'm kidding. Of course they can take photos. Photographers who get upset that others are taking photos...well, they're just lame. Just please, for the love the 7 Gods (the old and the new), don't jump in front my camera. Pretty please.
16. What time will you arrive at the site and for how long will you shoot?
This is where the oh so important itinerary comes in. Additionally, it depends on the collection you selected and what you would like covered. Typically I start around an hour prior to the bride finishing up make up and putting on the dress then we go 8 hours from there. If it's imperative that I stay till the end (i.e. send off) then subtract 8 hours from that time and that's when I start. But we can go over the details prior to the wedding.
17. If my event lasts longer than expected, will you stay? Is there an additional charge?
That depends. I've stayed later and haven't charged but then I've stayed a handful of hours longer and charged. Let me know what you're thinking and we can work something out.
Collections and prints
18. What collections do you offer?
I have three. Though it would be best if you reach out to me HERE. Weddings are not a one size fits all so there may be things you may or may not need that can change up the pricing.
19. Can I customize a package based on my needs?
See the last question. In short, absolutely.
20. Do you include engagement photos in your packages?
I do! neat huh?
21. What type of album designs do you offer? Do you provide any assistance in creating an album?
All my wedding collections come with an album. The base collection comes with a beautiful hardcover album while the second and third collection comes with stunning linen wrapped albums.
22. Do you provide retouching, color adjustment or other corrective services?
I process all delivered images in my patent pending proprietary Lux soap flakes...🤦 bad joke, sorry. I do process my images. I will generally retouch the photos (remove obvious blemishes and other unsightly things) but that's about where I leave it. If any photos require additional retouching ("I look big in these photos, can you make me look skinny", "I was smiling cute in this photo, can you put my face on this one in this photo") that I don't do.
23. How long after the wedding will I get the proofs? Will they be viewable online? On a CD?
First, if a photographer is still providing CDs as a means of photo delivery, they're probably very very old school and you may want to back away from them - very - very - slowly. Does your computer even have a CD drive? I digress. I do deliver images via an online gallery 6-8 weeks after your wedding for image downloading, sharing and print ordering.
22. Will you give me the negatives or the digital images, and is there a fee for that?
For digital images, I'm assuming this means the RAW files. if so, that's a no. Unfortunately. But it's really for your own protection. If you saw what I see when I go through these weddings, you would be scarred for life...🤷
